Watch Stephen F. Austin vs Kansas State Live streaming NCAA football

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Ryan Mueller still finds it hard to talk about one year later.

Kansas State was opening a new season amid high expectations. The school was dedicating a $90 million renovation to its football stadium. A bronze statue of coach Bill Snyder that stood to the west of the press box was unveiled amid much pomp and circumstance.

Then the Wildcats were humbled by a team from the Football Championship Subdivision.

''I want to forget that loss and not bring it back up, but it's hard because it was about this time last year that North Dakota State came into the house and beat us,'' Mueller said. ''I think it kind of showed our lack of maturity, and maybe we were a little overconfident.''

There's a good chance the Wildcats won't make a similar mistake Saturday night.

No. 20 Kansas State returns several key players from that team, which rallied to win eight times and beat Michigan in its bowl game, as it opens the season against Stephen F. Austin.

The Lumberjacks, a longtime FCS powerhouse, won just three games last season.

''We've learned a lot. Regardless of what division you are, teams are going to come to play,'' said the Wildcats' Tyler Lockett, one of the top wide receivers in the Big 12. ''You can't take anything for granted. They're not just going to let you win. You have to be able to go out there and compete. They're not going to lay down. If you want it, you have to come and get it.''

Last year was hardly the first time the Wildcats had struggled against a lower-profile team.

They were ranked sixth in 2003 when they lost to Marshall at home, and were No. 13 the next year, when they lost to Fresno State in their second game. They lost to Louisiana early in the 2009 season, Snyder's first after coming back from a brief retirement.

''We may have not overlooked North Dakota State, but just didn't have them highlighted like we need to highlight every single game,'' Wildcats linebacker Jonathan Truman said. ''This year we've been thinking about Stephen F. Austin. That's the one game we've been thinking about.''

Besides, a win over a Big 12 foe would trump just about everything for the Lumberjacks.

''With every great challenge comes an awesome opportunity,'' said coach Clint Conque, who was hired away from Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas in December. ''It's an opportunity for us to compete and see where we are as a program.''

What to watch when Kansas State and Stephen F. Austin open their seasons:

EASY LOOKAHEAD: Sure, the Wildcats are saying all the right things when it comes to focusing on the Lumberjacks. But with their Big 12 opener at Iowa State looming next week, and a showdown against No. 6 Auburn after that, nobody would blame them for looking ahead.

BIG 12 BULLIES: The Lumberjacks have never beaten a Big 12 foe in seven tries, including four games against Baylor. Stephen F. Austin was routed 61-13 by Texas Tech a year ago, a team Kansas State beat handily in November.

HUBERT'S HEIR: John Hubert was a stalwart at running back for Kansas State, starting each of the past three seasons. Now, the Wildcats are trying to find somebody to fill his shoes. Charles Jones will get the first shot with DeMarcus Robinson and Jarvis Leverett Jr. also in the mix.

WALKING ON WATERS: Jake Waters finally became comfortable midway through last season, and it showed in the quarterback's play down the stretch. Now a senior, he enters the season with lofty expectations. ''The game started to slow down for me,'' Waters said. ''I learned how to read defenses better, how to study film of our opponents. And I just kind of kept growing.''

CONQUE'S CHORE: A few eyebrows were raised when Conque left Central Arkansas for a conference rival in the offseason, especially one that his team beat by five touchdowns. But there is plenty of talent in Texas, and Stephen F. Austin has a solid tradition. Conque is banking on those factors to aid in a quick turnaround. ''The players have bought into a new way, a new attitude of doing things,'' Conque said, ''but we have a lot of work to do.''

USC vs. Fresno State Live streaming NCAA college football

The post-Derek Carr era should be an interesting one for the Fresno State Bulldogs. While they’re likely to remain a spread offense under offensive coordinator Dave Schramm, there’s more options this year with the potential of having a mobile quarterback in Brandon Connette.

Connette, along with Brian Burrell, is competing for the Bulldogs’ quarterback job, which has yet to see a resolution. Head coach Tim DeRuyter told reporters on Monday that both quarterbacks will play Saturday, with the starter being a game-time decision.

Instead, Burrell entered August seemingly a step behind Connette and played his way into forcing DeRuyter’s hand at delaying the decision.

Burrell, a junior, backed up Derek Carr last season after being a junior college transfer out of Bakersfield. Connette, a senior, is in his first and only season at Fresno State after transferring from Duke with a graduate exception.

Unlike Burrell, Connette has starting experience at the D-1 level and his dual-threat skill set brings a new wrinkle. At 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, he’s a big, athletic and physical quarterback that had several different uses in the ACC that pocker passer Derek Carr didn’t have in his repertoire at Fresno State.

Connette ran for 337 yards last year with Duke, including a career-high 101-yard outing in a 58-55 shootout loss to Pittsburgh. Furthermore, he’s Duke career leader in rushing touchdowns with 31 scores in his three years with the Blue Devils as a Blake Bell-type red zone quarterback/half back.

That threat of mobility under center could help a red zone offense that ranked just 53rd in the nation a year ago, despite averaging over 43 points per game.

What won’t help the Bulldogs though, is being without their biggest game-breaking threat from last season Davante Adams. The current Green Bay Packer led the country in receptions last year and combined with fellow former ‘Dog Isaiah Burse to combined for an incredible 230 receptions and 30 touchdowns.

That’s a lot of offense for Fresno State to replace, and they’ll likely do so with a receiving corps-by-committee.

Lead the way is Josh Harper, who made 11 starts as a sophomore last year. He caught 79 passes and scored 13 touchdowns on his way to earning second team All-Mountain West honors.

Joining Harper as a returning producer in the offense are the Bulldogs top two rushers, Josh Quezada(pictured above) and Marteze Waller. The due of backs combined for nearly 1,500 rushing yards last season.

Freshman Kurt Scoby was expected to be a big boost to the running game, but suffered a concussion in fall camp and is out indefinitely.

Up front, the Bulldogs enter 2014 without perhaps the country’s most underrated offensive lineman from 2013, Austin Wentworth.

Twice Wentworth made the All-Mountain West team and he was a big reason for Fresno State preventing USC from registering a sack in the Las Vegas Bowl.

He’ll be replaced at left tackle by junior Alex Fifita, who has made 11 career starts, six of which came last year at left guard. Fifita’s experience should help, and it showed in both spring and fall camp, making him one of the Bulldogs best performers of the offseason.

Joining Fifita on the line are returning starters Cody Wichmann, Bo Bonnheim and Justin Northern.

Bonnheim moves from guard to center to replace Lars Bramer, while Wichmann and Northern provide stability on the right side of the line at guard and tackle, respectively. Sean Rubalcava, a senior, will make his first career start at left guard on Saturday.

Overall, the Fresno State offense returns a veteran offensive line and a complete running game. But with a new quarterback and a new-look receiving corps, don’t look for the Bulldogs to repeat as the nation’s No. 1 passing offense.

Florida State Seminoles vs Oklahoma State Cowboys Live stremaing ncaa college football

College football fever has returned to Tallahassee, however, it's 857 miles away in Arlington, Texas, where the Florida State Seminoles are heating up.

Owners of the nation's longest current winning streak (16 games) and the AP poll's No. 1 ranking, Florida State begins its quest for a second consecutive national title against Oklahoma State inside of AT&T Stadium.

"I think it is good to get your kids out in a venue which is kind of bowl-like, or an atmosphere that is big like a playoff game -- those neutral site types," Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "I think the more times you can put yourself in that situation, the better it is."

The Seminoles are hoping to make a return trip to Dallas at the end of the season as AT&T Stadium is also host to the College Football Playoff's first national championship game.

The matchup between FSU and OSU will mark the fifth time the two teams have played each other, with the Seminoles holding a 3-1 overall advantage.

FSU returns 15 starters from last year's national championship team, including Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston and nine preseason All-ACC team members.

The Cowboys, coming off a loss to Missouri in last year's Cotton Bowl, return 10 starters from last year's team. After losing three out of their top four wide receivers and their best defensive player in cornerback Justin Gilbert, OSU is in rebuilding mode.

According to research done by Phil Steele, Oklahoma State has the lowest percentage of returning letter winners from 2013 of any team in the country (54.29%)

Newly named starting quarterback J.W. Walsh leads the Oklahoma State's offense into the game against last year's No. 1 scoring defense, which returns seven starters.

The Seminoles are 19-point favorites over the Cowboys.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Oklahoma State junior quarterback J.W. Walsh vs. the vaunted Florida State secondary.

Dubbed the "No Fly Zone," the Seminoles secondary is led by preseason All-American safety Jalen Ramsey. FSU led the FBS in interceptions (26) and passing yards allowed per game (156.6) in 2013.

Splitting time last year, Walsh started five games for the Cowboys and finished with 1,333 yards and nine total touchdowns. Now the No. 1 guy, he enters Saturday's contest surrounded by a roster that lacks a wide receiver with 40 career receptions.

TRENDING UP

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys are entering this season with a roster full of unproven players, but OSU has been in this situation in both 2008 and 2010 under coach Mike Gundy. Both years they were picked to finish near the bottom of the Big 12, and each year the Cowboys proved the predictions wrong, ranking as high as seventh in the AP poll in 2008 and sharing the Big 12 title in 2010 after winning 11 games.

It’s been an off-season that Bob Davie would like to forget.  The New Mexico Lobos head coach had to suspend starters SaQwan Edwards, Crusoe Gongbay, and Jamal Price due to arrests, though all three players have since had their charges dropped and have been reinstated.  Thankfully, it is now time to put all of the distractions behind and play football.

The Lobos draw their long time rival, the UTEP Miners, in the season opener. Last year’s game was a shootout that the Lobos won 42-35, ending with a stop on fourth-and-inches stop by the New Mexico defense in overtime.  This first game is critical for both teams if they want to reach bowl eligibility this year.

WEB SITES: GoLobos.com, New Mexico’s official athletic site | UTEPAthletics.com, UTEP’s official athletic site

What to watch – New Mexico:

1. Crusoe Gongbay:  When Gongbay was reinstated, the Lobos offense was instantly upgraded. He is a talented runner who has quickly gotten back into game shape and should reclaim his starting running back job this season. Don’t look for Gongbay to start, but he should be on the field within the first couple of series.  Once he establishes his role in the offense, look for Gongbay to receive a majority of carries, with Jhurell Pressley and Teriyon Gipson spelling him as needed.

2. Cole Gautsche: Gautsche did not play in last year’s game due to a concussion. His presence should create issues for the Miners, who had trouble stopping the Lobos' pistol offense a year ago. Gautsche worked on his throwing in the offseason, and he gives opposing defenses fits because he runs like a fullback and has the ability to make big plays while running the option.  Gautsche is the Lobos' leading returning rusher and, despite his concussion issues, he does not expect to alter his downhill running style.

3. Lobos Defense: The Lobos were near the bottom in almost every relevant defensive statistic last year. That prompted the team to make a change and promote Kevin Cosgrove from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator. Cosgrove has worked with this experienced group through the fall, so look for the defensive unit to improve from 2013, starting with this game.

What to watch - UTEP:

1. Jameill Showers: Showers had success against the Lobos last year, passing for 119 yards and a touchdown while adding 47 yards on the ground with another score. Look for Showers to have more control of the pro-set offense the Miners run. He will have run and pass options at the line, and will be tasked with consistently making the right call.

2. Aaron Jones : Jones earned many honors as a freshman in 2013.  He was named to Conference USA's All-Freshman team, the College Football News All-Freshman team honorable mention honors and Athlon Sports Freshman All-American third team. Last year, the talented Jones ran for 127 yards and twotouchdowns against the Lobos. Jones will be a focal point for the Miners and the Lobos must find a way to contain him.

North Texas vs Texas live streaming ncaa college football

AUSTIN, Texas — For 16 years, Mack Brown led the Texas Longhorns, reviving a dormant program into a powerhouse that won one national championship and played for another.

Hired away from Louisville when Brown was pushed out of after four sub-par seasons, Strong's first Longhorns team takes the field Saturday night against North Texas, a bowl team last season that is expected to contend for the Conference USA title.

Strong has had eight months to break down and rebuild a program that hasn't won a Big 12 title since 2009, restore toughness and shed what he called a sense of entitlement that had crept in. He has kicked players off the team, suspended others and turned to last season's injured quarterback, David Ash, to lead his offense.

"It's about us putting a 'T' back into Texas. It's still about just toughness, it's about trust, it's about just being a total team," Strong said.

Brown dragged an injury-riddled team into the final game last season with a chance to the win the conference title, but a 30-10 loss to Baylor essentially shut the door on his Texas career. He was pushed out a week later, but was allowed to coach Texas in the Alamo Bowl, a punchless 30-7 loss to Oregon.

Texas turned to Strong, who seemed destined to be a career assistant until finally given his first head-coaching job at Louisville. A 37-16 record over four seasons there catapulted him to Texas, where he is the first black head coach of a men's sports program in school history.

"There's going to be a lot of emotion on Saturday, I know that. Just running through the tunnel is going to be something special," Strong said.

Some things to watch when Texas faces North Texas:

STRONG: Texas fans will be watching everything he does, from how he runs out with the team to whether he knows the words of the song "The Eyes of Texas" when its' over. Will he smile and clap a lot like Brown did, or does he scowl? At a place like Texas, Strong is under the microscope if he wins and most especially if he loses.

ASH'S HEAD: Ash missed most of last season with concussion symptoms and he faced serious questions at home whether he should continue playing. Ash insists he never seriously considered giving up football. Ash says he's learning how to avoid hits, but 100,000 fans will be watch to see how he gets up if he gets popped by North Texas.

ASH'S TARGETS: Ash needs a breakout receiver. Jaxon Shipley who catches a lot of balls but rarely scores touchdowns, has been cleared to play after a training camp hamstring injury. Marcus Johnson displayed big-play ability in 2013 but tapered off the second half of the season.

NORTH TEXAS QB: A title contender in Conference USA, the Mean Green has a new quarterback in junior college transfer Josh Greer. He'll be protected by a veteran offensive line, but how he handles his first start in front of 100,000 fans will likely determine whether North Texas can make a game of it.

TEXAS HELMETS: Yes, Texas players will have the burnt-orange Longhorn decals on their helmet. Strong created a stir in training camp by saying they had to "earn the right" to wear the school's multimillion-dollar brand, and said this week they've done that.
